The best way to set a good sound for your rehearsal is to get your bass player to set a level relative to the drummer, them bring the vocals in with drums and bass so you can hear all 3 clearly, only then bring in guitars, keys etc... this prevents a "loudness war" between your rhythm section which ruins your balance.

Even the heaviest bands really benefit from playing acoustically from time to time. Strip your setup right back so that your vocalists can hear themselves without the PA system and work through your material, you'll be suprised how tight you sound when you plug back in.

Overtightening cymbals and high hats is the fastest way to crack them, the cymbals should be able to swing freely, this also means they project properly and don't sound choked.
